First Year Payments on Account
In your first year of self-assessment, HMRC collects your tax bill plus an advance payment (50%) towards next year's bill — all due on 31 January. A second advance is due 31 July. This is often a shock if you haven't set the cash aside.
Payments on account are based on your current year's income tax + Class 4 NI liability. If your income drops next year you can apply to reduce them. Class 2 NI (£3.45/week for 2025/26) is collected via Self Assessment and is not included here as it forms part of the balancing payment. Speak to an accountant before your first filing to avoid surprises.
